Whether you’re a snowshoe novice or a pro, this guide will help you discover top snowshoeing destinations in the Hudson Valley just in time for winter fun.

While not all days during winter in the Hudson Valley are snowy, there are the occasional storms that leave the region covered in snow. When that happens, it is the perfect time to get out and embrace what the season has to offer. Snowshoeing is an accessible activity that can be enjoyed by almost anyone. Check out these snowshoe-friendly destinations during the next snow day in the region.

Bear Mountain State Park

Bear Mountain

Bear Mountain State Park is located in a rugged mountain setting, and the park offers numerous amenities and activities. In the winter, snowshoeing can be enjoyed on trails that offer spectacular views of the park and mountains. Park hours are dawn to dusk.

Fahnestock Winter Park

Fahnestock Winter Park is home to an extensive network of blazed snowshoe trails. Snowshoes are available to rent for all ages and ability levels. Rentals cost $15 per day or $7 per hour. After hitting the trails, check out the concession stand for hot food and beverages. Plan ahead by taking a look at the winter trail map here. The park is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Harriman State Park

Offering 200 miles of hiking trails and 32 lakes and reservoirs, Harriman State Park is sure not to disappoint for those looking to snowshoe in the winter months. It’s open from dawn to dusk seven days a week, year-round.

James Baird State Park

Pleasant Valley

With seven miles of scenic trails, there is plenty to explore at this well-manicured state park in Dutchess County. In the winter months, the property is open for snowshoeing. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset.

Lake Taghkanic State Park

Lake Taghkanic offers many activities and amenities throughout the season. In the winter, dress warmly and look forward to snowshoeing on the park trails. Enjoy views of the forest and rolling hills in the winter snow. The park is open sunrise to sunset Labor Day through Memorial Day.

Mills Norrie State Park (Margaret Lewis Norrie)

Staatsburg

Enjoy wooded trails with views of the Hudson River, which runs directly along the western boundary of the park. There are numerous trails on the property that are ideal for snowshoeing. The park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset; park office hours are Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Minnewaska State Park Preserve

Snowshoeing is a popular activity at Minnewaska State Park in the wintertime. It’s easy to see why with panoramic views of the Hudson Valley and rolling snow-covered terrain. In the winter, it is essential to stay on marked trails in addition to adhering to park policies, including the recommendation of avoiding getting close to cliffs, which may be icy. The current operating hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Minnewaska State Park Preserve: Sam’s Point Area

Cragsmoor

Sam’s Point Preserve is the southernmost section of Minnewaska State Park Preserve and is the highest section of the Shawangunk Mountains. With an area spanning approximately 5,000 acres, there is plenty to explore, especially by snowshoe. It is essential to note which trails are open and adhere to park policies in the winter. Current operating hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mohonk Mountain House

New Paltz

Winter sports activities are complimentary to overnight guests, but those visiting for the day must purchase a day guest winter sports pass ($125 per person allowing access to several winter activities). Mohonk Preserve

Gardiner

Experience the excitement of snowshoeing on natural and groomed terrain at Mohonk Preserve. Look forward to snow-covered scenery including open fields and forests. With differing topography, beginners and pros can look forward to taking a trek on the carriage roads and trails. Check out suggested ski and snowshoe routes here. The preserve is open daily from sunrise to sunset, while the visitor center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Plattekill Mountain

Snowshoes are available for rent to use both on and off the mountain. The rentals are $48 per day and include snowshoes and poles. Snowshoers are able to share the trails and walk downhill on the beginner ski area or explore the miles of terrain on the Catskill Scenic Trail offsite.

Rentals must be reserved online and can only be picked up during store hours (check website for latest store hours). All snowshoe rentals are due at the end of the business day at the drop box behind the Annex at 28 Main Street in New Paltz. There are numerous options available for snowshoes, ensuring you will have the best gear.

Potter Brothers

Multiple Locations

Snowshoe rentals are available in both the Kingston and Fishkill locations, and no reservations are required. Snowshoes cost $25 for the day and can be picked up the evening before (after 3 p.m.).
