While not all days during winter in the Hudson Valley are snowy, there are the occasional storms that leave the region covered in snow. When that happens, it is the perfect time to get out and embrace what the season has to offer. Snowshoeing is an accessible activity that can be enjoyed by almost anyone. Check out these snowshoe-friendly destinations during the next snow day in the region.
Bear Mountain State Park

Bear Mountain State Park is located in a rugged mountain setting, and the park offers numerous amenities and activities. In the winter, snowshoeing can be enjoyed on trails that offer spectacular views of the park and mountains. Park hours are dawn to dusk.
Fahnestock Winter Park

Fahnestock Winter Park is home to an extensive network of blazed snowshoe trails. Snowshoes are available to rent for all ages and ability levels. Rentals cost $15 per day or $7 per hour. After hitting the trails, check out the concession stand for hot food and beverages. Plan ahead by taking a look at the winter trail map here. The park is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Lake Taghkanic State Park

Minnewaska State Park Preserve

Snowshoeing is a popular activity at Minnewaska State Park in the wintertime. It’s easy to see why with panoramic views of the Hudson Valley and rolling snow-covered terrain. In the winter, it is essential to stay on marked trails in addition to adhering to park policies, including the recommendation of avoiding getting close to cliffs, which may be icy. The current operating hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Minnewaska State Park Preserve: Sam’s Point Area

Sam’s Point Preserve is the southernmost section of Minnewaska State Park Preserve and is the highest section of the Shawangunk Mountains. With an area spanning approximately 5,000 acres, there is plenty to explore, especially by snowshoe. It is essential to note which trails are open and adhere to park policies in the winter. Current operating hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
